Jan. 18th, 2026 06:26 pmSatomi feels like an idiot.
“Satomi-kun's pinfeathers are coming in,” Kyouji noted. He kept noting them. Kept poking and prodding and laughing too hard and getting too excited about the whole thing.
“I could help. I promise I'll be nice and gentle, you've just gotta promise to tell me if it hurts.”
Maybe his braincells fell out, too, when he molted a few days earlier. Maybe the itching and the anxiety are driving him crazy. Maybe he was just born stupid enough to say yes. Because he does, indeed, say yes.
This is the first time he's touched Satomi's wings. With his bare hands, at least. Sometimes Satomi bumps into him, leans on him, and his wings brush against Kyouji's sleeve.
They are exactly as soft as they look. Softer, maybe. He says so, too, out loud. "Satomi-kun's so fluffy."
Satomi does not dignify him with a response.
He lightly strokes over his pretty white feathers, only lightly scraping his fingers between all of them, until he encounters something stiff and papery within all the angel softness.
Once he has a pinfeather between his fingers, he pinches ever-so-gently until the sheathe crumbles into little chips under his fingers... It's oddly fun. Like bubble wrap, but a bit messier.
Satomi seems to have gotten more comfortable, too.
He'd been pretty reluctant at first.
“It's sensitive. So just— be careful,” he'd said over his shoulder. Every time Kyouji touched a pinfeather, he'd tense up in expectation for the pain.
Kyouji has been very careful not to hurt him.
Now, he's fluffing out his feathers to give Kyouji better access. He's even gotten a content little sigh out of him.
Kyouji finds another cluster of pinfeathers, all bunched up in the little contour feathers toward the base of Satomi's wings. "Hard to get 'em here, eh?"
He pinches one of the sheathes, carefully rubs his fingers together against it. Doesn't take long until it gives way and flakes off between his fingers.
"I'm pretty good at this. Maybe you should ask me for help again next time."
He ruffles Satomi's feathers again, shaking out the little bits of sheathe as much as searching for more pin feathers, as much as just enjoying how nice it is to touch.
A shiver visibly runs down Satomi's spine and his feathers follow, fluffing up in an outward ripple. Pretty satisfying to watch.
Kyouji laughs before he can help himself. “Aha, like Ghibli.”
”Like— what?” Satomi slurs, slightly. Mushmouthed. Maybe the preening is making him sleepy — the kid tends to look like death warmed over at least a third of the time, and this is the most relaxed he's ever been.
”Ghibli! Like... ah... what would you know? What did they do recently...? Ponyo? Howl's Moving Cas—“
“I know what Ghibli is,” Satomi cuts in.
“Ahh, of course you do. Satomi-kun knows everything~!”
“Shut up.”
Fondness squeezes at all the meaty junk in his chest. He sinks his fingers deep enough into Satomi's feathers to feel the downy layer underneath, trying to force the pressure to let up.
You would think he hit him, with the noise Satomi makes.
Slowly, he pulls his hand back.
“You alright there, Satomi-ku—”
“Shut up.”
Kyouji frowns slightly. “Hey, kid, that's no good. Did I hurt you or somethin'?”
He reaches past Satomi's wings to put a hand on his shoulder, only to have his hand smacked away. His skin stings a little.
When he looks up from his reddened knuckles, he finds Satomi half turned toward him, eyes wide and a little bit teary.
Satomi sure feels a lot of feelings, big as can be. Quick to anger, quick to lash out. But he looks more scared than mad at the moment which really says something's wrong.
“C'mon, kid, you gotta—”
“My tu- stomach's upset.”
“... What?”
“My stomach's upset,” he repeats, with the fearful solemness you'd expect out of someone who just watched themselves die. “Th-the rice. Maybe. I need to— Bathroom.”
Before he can ask any more questions, Satomi launches out of the booth and toward the door like his ass is on fire. His little legs clear the space in fewer paces than Kyouji physically thought possible for him, and he's in the hall before the door even shuts behind him.
“Kid's gonna hurt himself...”
Kyouji glances at his watch. He'll wait about five minutes before he goes to check on him.

there were so many not-even-remotely-new ghibli movie options i almost chose instead of howl's (kiki's, spirited away. i probably could have done totoro) but i chose howl's specifically because there's a bird guy in it hahaha
it will definitely lead to some very interesting developments... kyouji you cannot leave satomi ever. he's bonded with you now.
